Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs): FAQs
A DPF is an emissions control device fitted to modern diesel engines. Its purpose is to trap and remove soot (particulate matter) from the exhaust gases before they leave the tailpipe, helping reduce air pollution.
Exhaust gases pass through the filter’s honeycomb-like structure.
Soot particles are captured in the filter walls.
The filter then needs to clean itself through a process called regeneration, where the trapped soot is burned off at high temperatures, leaving behind a small amount of ash.
Regeneration is the cleaning process of the DPF:
Passive regeneration: Happens automatically when the exhaust temperature is high enough (e.g., on long highway drives).
Active regeneration: The vehicle injects extra fuel or adjusts engine settings to raise exhaust temperature and burn off soot.
Forced/manual regeneration: A service technician uses diagnostic equipment to trigger regeneration if the filter is too blocked.
Frequent short trips where the engine never reaches optimal temperature.
